Cox Medical Center South and Trauma Center Reviews
Before you go to Cox Medical Center South and Trauma Center, you may want to know what the people who have already gone to this Springfield emergency room think.
Aka AlexandriaBeen across United States and have never seen an emergency room service where you had to sit in the waiting room for over 8 hours and still not get any kind of service out of the hospital. By far the worst experience as far as medical services and let me add this… third world countries have better hospital service than what I have seen at Cox South Emergency Room. I’d advise on booking a hotel room across the street if you are trying to go to emergency room at this facility because you will require few nights of sleep prior to being seen.Rachel Desilva⭐️⭐️Sadly an aweful experience. I waited 6 hours to not be seen. Watched a man vomit 17 times in the waiting room. Missed the vomit cup and hit the seat and floor. NO ONE CLEANED IT UP. If you dare ask how much longer it’s going to be, you are Met with terrible attitudes. There were 2 amazing techs though. Sadly they are only there for a month. Was told my hemo was extremely low and was borderline transfusion level but still wasn’t considered a priority. I ended up signing out and leaving due to the wait… they absolutely need more staff. And the current staff needs MASSIVE ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENTS.Delores SmithWould give no stars if possible. Not sure why they ask your pain level when you come in. 10 out of 10 and they let you set for 6 plus hours… get real.Becca WhoCaresI have recently moved into the Springfield, Missouri area. I chose Cox Health System for my care. I have to say that I have had exceptional experiences with the doctors and their staff when I have had appointments in the various specialties that I require. I would venture to say I have received superior care. I must say that my Emergency Room experiences have been another story. My doctor called me an ambulance from her office to be transported to the ER. I had severe head and leg pain. Was unable to stand or walk. That made me feel that I was should be seen in a timely manner. I waited for eight and a half hours before I saw a doctor. I am not saying that other people did not require treatment before me. I understand the triage system. But, when I saw people smiling and laughing that came into the ER well after me, being taken to the ER before me, it was distressing to me. In eight and a half hours sitting there watching what was going on, it became evident to me that the people who were waiting the longest including me tended to be 65 years or older. I don’t know if this is age discrimination or Medicare discrimination. I would love to see statistics of the waiting time of people by age. When I made a comment to someone in the actual Emergency Room about an eight and a half hour wait and seeing people who were in no worse shape than me going to the ER long before me. I was told that they took people that they can get in-and-out quickly before others. That is not how the triage system is supposed to work. So, I sat in the waiting room for eight and a half hours so the ER could treat Urgent Care patients. I could have gone to Kansas City, been seen and treated much quicker than waiting in this ER. Just because long waiting times seems to be the norm for ER waiting times in Springfield does not make it acceptable. I have lived in many places and this is ridiculous. I have never seen anything like this. Is anyone at Cox Health looking into this unacceptable process. Maybe Cox should set up a separate Urgent Care Clinic next to the ER for patients that can be treated quickly by a different staff. Evidently, people are being determined as in-and-out patients anyway, why not send them to an Urgent Care Clinic next door. After I finally got into an ER room, I was treated well by my nurse. The doctor ordered appropriate test and x-rays. I was informed of my results and was observed overnight. I must say I was not given anything for the pain, the reason I was there. Finally, the admitting doctor asked me if there was anything else she could do for me. I began crying and said could I at least get a Tylenol, which is what I had been treating myself with. That is all I got, Tylenol. When asked if I wanted to stay another day or go home, all I could think is let me the He!! Out of here.richard minich⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedMichelle J and Haylee were the two RNs that took care of my son that night and they were fantastic. In fact all the Drs and staff that night were great. THANKSAbbey Prewitt⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI was dealing with chronic pain to the point that it was searing and unbearable. My family physician wasn’t helping much (at all), so I finally went to the ER. I was expecting it to be slow, crowded, and miserable but my experience was the exact opposite. The staff was kind and attentive. The facility was spacious, clean, and very nice. My wait was not as long as I thought it would be and the nurse was so sweet. I finally got the help and medicine that I needed.Angie WhitlowMy mother came here for symptoms of heart problems. I came to ER to see her 12 hrs later. Syringe caps on floor alchohol pads opened used on floor. Nurses was so hateful and disrespectful. I am actually still waiting in the ER for test to be done none have even been started. Seriously the worse hospital I have been too. My dogs vet office is more sanitary then this.Jay Are⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Had to use the ER for our Grandson, fairly quick service given the amount of people in the ER at that time. Staff was professional and responsive given our “special needs” situation. When we seen the doctor he was professional and straightforward. A little quirky on the bed side manner but he was understand and seemed to “turn it around” at the end. If we need the ER again when we are in this area, I would come here again.SHARON RAILSBACKMy Brother took my nephew in 6 + hours ago and still waiting to see a DR. This is outrageous!! It’s not like we don’t have insurance!!! It’s not like we are drug addicts . Something is really wrong with there system of taking care of people.Jim ReevesSadly, a poor experience for my father. Taken a fall at 77 years old. Arrived via ambulance….after initial assessment and explanation of situation the physician cold and callously asked “why did you bring him here?”. Spoke to the dr. All of 3-4 minutes. No xrays, leads to heart monitor were detached numerous times and the staff never reconnected, nurse wanted me to get him up to use the urinal, discharged after 3-4 hrs with very little care. Heart lead pads not removed, no bandaid over IV line (bled significantly on way home). I asked for a couple blankets for warmth and comfort to no avail until a very nice RAD tech took care of him during CT. The only two bright spots were the RAD Techs. I’ve been involved in healthcare for 25+ years and this was a very poor experience. A letter will be written to Coxhealth. Maybe someone will understand and do something for the next patient.Brandon HelgesonNEVER write reviews on anything but this must be heard. I took my fiancé to the ER last night because she had horrible back pains and could barely walk, her lower back was also swollen. We had to wait about 4 hours to get into a room. The doctor took one test, a pee test, for which they only tested for pregnancy and when we asked if anything else was tested with the urine the doctor replied, they lost the urine. We had to wait in that room for about 2-3 hours when the doctor finally came back to tell us we should rest her back etc, when I asked what may have caused this he seemed irritated and replied it could be numerous things. My fiancé then asked what could have caused the swelling and she got the reply, I really don’t know. THEY ARE DOCTORS AND THEY DON’T KNOW!?!? We had to wait around 6-7 hours for a DOCTOR to say he doesn’t know, and pretty much called it a back ache. HORRIBLECyndi Schroder⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAbsolutely treated with respect and promptly seen. I had an episode with my COPD around 10 pm Saturday night. Quickly got me in an intake room, put on oxygen and in a exam room. Xray, EKG staff and respiratory were great as well as the Doctor. Nurses were super as well. Really couldn’t have asked for better treatment. Thanks to everyone! That one GirlIf you want to get bitten by BED BUGS and have the staff do nothing about it then this is the hospital for you!! We stayed longer then a week because our son went into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, I ended up with 17 bites!!!! Painful itchy bites and wasn’t moved to a different room until our last day! When the first bite happened I was awake at night and sat up saw 1 brown flat little bug run across the white pillow! The whole time I was being told “we didn’t find any bugs” then why the heck am being bitten so many times?? I’m just glad my baby wasn’t bitten. Now I’m worried if any bugs hitch hiked home with usSteven GibbonsOne thing cox south er is not short of is attitude. People working there act lile being nice is painful. But the real issue is how the place is run. No matter what is wrong with you they are going to give you an iv and make you wait in the lobby and you will wait forever. The other night as I was there for 3 1/2 hours….. I left. Many many other people left as well. Some people said they’d been waiting 4 or 5 hours. I went right to cox north were they got me right in.Jason & Gina Murray⭐️⭐️Went into the ER yesterday and this place is very hit or miss according to what doctors that are attending. The nurses, Sarah and Hailey were great. The doctors did not discuss anything with me. They ordered an MRI and didn’t even tell me they were ordering it so I was scared of what was going on. They came in one time and then I didn’t see them anymore after that. When they released me to go home, they didn’t even come in and discuss a diagnosis or what they thought was wrong or let me ask any question they just sent the nurses in with my discharge papers. I have gone in and had great doctors, but this time I was very disappointed!Brandy TaylorThe worst hospital I have ever been to my husband is trying to be seen due to heart problems and we jave been waiting for 7 hours still in the waiting roomJacob WincklerThis place is a joke. Of you are going g to make people wait for hours on end, the least you can do is be somewhat cordial.Jason HairThe morgue has better health care service. The ladies at the front are rude and talk over you and have little bedside manner if any and to top it all off I have been here with my father almost 3 hours and he has been shrieking in pain the entire time and they refuse to do anything the only thing they have done is take his vitals twice.Carol Jeffers⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedExcelent care ,ICU was above an beyond professional, caring, and informative,we had a very serious medical problem an so blessed they were the nearest hospitalAmanda Garretson⭐️⭐️I came in with severe abdominal pain, it felt like knives were being ripped through my stomach. My boyfriend was with me, and he let me lay in his lap and was running his fingers through my hair to help me focus on something other than the horrid pain in my gut. They got my vitals fairly quickly, then I waited 6 hours to be taken back to a room while people who were sitting around playing on their phones were going back before me. The lady sitting next to us told my boyfriend “she’s shaking and crying, does she need a blanket?” He told her no, thank you…she’s just in a lot of pain. When they called her name she told them she thought I should go before her, but they left me waiting for another hour after that. Finally got back to a room and the doc came in almost immediately, I wish I could remember his name cause hes the only reason I’m giving 2 stars. He ordered a CT scan with contrast and immediately got me Dilaudid in my IV. Turns out I had colitis caused by salmonella poisoning. I was admitted and in the hospital for 8 days… The ER wait times are insane and they definitely do a terrible job of prioritizing the more serious cases. If someone is crying in pain and another is sitting on their cell phone playing games, pretty sure the crying in pain with a fever of 102.4 and elevated BP should go back first. Just sayin’.Chelsea WolfCurrently sitting in the ER. Arrived with a child via ambulance via Ambulance with a head wound and back injury. It’s now 2 in the morning and have seen the population in the ER turn over twice and have seen no one. Child has medications she cannot take due to her food and water restrictions. Worst ER I have ever step foot in.Bumble MonsterWORST HOSPITAL I HAVE EVER BEEN TO, DO NOT GO HERE, WAITED 8 HOURS AND WAS NEVER SEEN THIS PLACE IS AWFUL!Christina PeckI was sent to the ER from urgent care on republic, because my 5 year old son’s lymph nodes are the size of golf balls, and no one can tell me why. The urgent care doctor said it concerned him and that my son needs a CBC immediately! The doctor at the urgent care said I could have had the CBC done at his office but it would take 2 days for results, and said the ER would be better because I’d get results in a couple hours. I arrived at the ER with my son at 7pm and waited for 2 hours and was told it was going to be another 5 hours to be seen! So they want my son and myself to wait until 3am to get a freaking CBC done!? Then we’d have to wait for the results on top of that! I decided to leave, I am 8 months pregnant, tired and my son hadn’t eaten for a while. The people at the desk tried to get me to stay telling me that my son could have a serious illness and that it could be life threatening. They were eluding that it could be cancerous yet they wouldn’t treat him. So I’m taking him to his doctor for s CBC and we will go from there.Marcia FryStaff is rude an uncaring. Has left my 89 yr old mother with an allergic reaction sitting unattended for over two hours. No communication, asked how many exam rooms they had and how many doctors were on staff and a nurse butted in and wanted to know why I needed this info and that they couldn’t give this out. This place is beyond bad, people should never be treated like this. This staff should not have chosen health care as a profession! Avoid at all costs.Megan KorsiThe wait time is ridiculous. The nurse (RN) named Kandi R. didnt put on gloves once anytime she came into our room. She came in and asked the patient (my friend) why the doctor was ordering a pelvic exam….?! Like, idk lady, you work here.John Likens5 and a half hours still aint been seen yetCarolyn PentecostMy son was brought in with what we thought was a heart attack. They did blood work EKG and xray but never gave us results. We were there from11pm to 745 am. Never saw a Dr or given results. We came there for help…no help there. Never going there again. We saw 5 people leave after no attention was given.trish barton2 1/2 hrs in er got to a room finally 1hr b4 dr came in!!! My son is 11 years old but you can sure hear the nurse’s and Drs talking!! This is why I drive all the way to Kc !!!!!!Greg Cross⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedTop notch people who are, very compassionate. Treated her like a queen.John HelmsUnderstaffed in the ER, 7+ hour wait and the waiting room wasn’t even half full. Multiple parts of the ER weren’t even being used. Registration employees and triage staff rude to numerous patients. Many left with IVs still in to go elsewhere. As others have said, stay away if possible.Sky BI sat in the e.r. waiting room for 6 hours with severe pain from what is presumably a hernia (already having double hernia surgery at the age of 2) and all that was done was a urine sample and a vital recheck once. All while others showing little to zero pain were getting there after me, getting back to a room, being treated and being discharged without me hearing a single thing. This is a bulls**t excuse for a hospital.Leah LeahZero! Who can I complain to? My husband is very sick and we have been waiting since 1:30pm and it is 7:55pm. “The front desk tells us yes, we see you have been here the longest, we aren’t sure when you will go back. Hang in there.” Several others have went back who came in a lot later than us. I asked to speak with a manager twice and I waited 45 minutes to speak with her and no one ever came to talk to me. We left after waiting 7!!!!! Yes, 7 hours! Cox system is the worst! This shouldn’t legally be considered ER.Ashleigh TuckerThe absolute worst experience at any ER every! Took my sister in law in tonight to be seen because after speaking with her primary care doctor she was told to come in due to her Gallbladder possibly rupturing. We sat there for a little over 6 hours and her vitals were only checked once WITH having a very high blood pressure reading the first time and that was after the shift change 3.5 hours in! The first set of nurses were absolutely horrid! They looked so miserable to be there! Zero bed side manner! There were multiple people who came in with extremely sicknesses or injuries and they were told longest wait time had been 5 hours. NOT true! There was also a baby(under2) who clearly had RSV or maybe even croup! He still hadn’t been seen when we left(without my sister in law being seen btw) he had been there waiting 5 hours! Then there was another patient who was so sick due to complications from surgery she had just had and she was left in the waiting room with everybody else puking in the trash can, moaning and crying LOUDLY for 4.5 hours by the time we had left. We told the first shift nurse that were there when we got there that somebody had puked in the bathroom floor (which I stepped in) they NEVER called the cleaning crew, put up a sign or NOTHING! As soon as the next shift nurses came on(all three men 2 were super rude and act better than you but one was so nice and you could tell he very much cared for his patients) we told the super nice male nurse and he got the cleaning crew up right away and started rechecking everybody’s vitals after they’d been sitting there for hours upon hours of waiting since the first set of nurses were absolutely awful and they didn’t give two craps about all the sick patients who mind you did not ask to be there bad things just happen! I will NEVER take another family member there! One good nurse out of the 15 or so we had met during our 6+ hour wait! Do not work in health care if you do not have the compassion or love to work with those who are sick or hurting and are coming to you for YOUR help because they are unable to help themselves at that point! Also not one time during this long wait period did a single person come and wipe down any of the chairs or anything that very sick people were drooling, puking, cough, sleeping, laying on during this awful flu, RSV and strep season! I am just so disappointed in our experience! I mean for goodness sakes a man who came in HAVING A HEART ATTACK HAD TO WAIT IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR ALMOST AN HOUR TOO! What in the world!! Babies, elderly and critically life threatening people should go first but at this places babies were left for last, people who were having Major complications from surgery, an elderly lady with an actual broken hip waited for hours until she was crying because she was in SO much pain and my sister in law who’s doctor even said he is pretty sure her gallbladder ruptured were all seen way behind people who just walked in with “the flu” or small stuff got to go back first smiling, laughing and chatting all the way back through the doors! What kind of hospital treats people like this!!! So disappointing!!milky southZERO Stars, but they don’t let you go that low. I went in two mornings ago for a diverticulitis flare up. I had been having pain for 4 weeks and had been on a liquid diet for two weeks. My primary care doctor had prescribed me a couple of antibiotics, which I had issues with. The second having given me a rash. My primary doctor was out of his office until Friday. So I went to Cox South ER. Dr. David Lee thought it “appropriate” to give me 5mg Hadrol. I did not know that at the time, but it is an anti psychotic. I was never belligerent, as people who know me will testify that I am a very kind empathetic person. I come closer to aggravating people by calling them Honey, Sweetie, Love, and Darling, than I do with my over all demeanor. I am still dealing with the side effects of this unnecessary drug. For the first 24, I was nauseated, could not eat because I was too tired, and felt dizzy. I am still having issues with feeling tired. All over a drug that I did not need. Cox South is notorious for being unkind, uncaring, harsh, and unsympathetic. As last year I was having stomach issues with a racing heart and was treated nearly as bad, though I was not given anything like an anti psychotic. Come to find out by going to a allergist, I have celiac disease. They tend to have the attitude that they are the best at everything, so if they can not figure it out then you are crazy. It has to be you, because they can’t be wrong or be overlooking anything. A good doctor will have the attitude of “I do not doubt that you hurt but I can not figure out why”. It is also called being humble. A characteristic that most at this ER lack. I suggest that you do not go to any hospital, unless you are dying, then go to Mercy. I have actually heard better things of them.Phillip KindredThe ER dept. needs help on how to get patients in and out my daughter has been here for five hours and three patients that got here after her have been sent back before her that were not life threatening just wondering how this happens. I guess I’m just not very learned on how your system works but I’m not impressed at all, I know your staff has to deal with a lot of different people but they really need to get a little better at what they do, I know that Mr. Steve Edwards will never get this but just wanted to rant. Mr. Edwards you need to do a little better about how your hospital ER dept.is ran!! Thank you PhillipAmber ClarkWait times…ridiculous.Gina Murray⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI went to Urgent Care in Ozark on Saturday, April 28, 2018. They could not treat me there because I needed more extensive care, so they called an ambulance to take me to Cox South. From the time I walked into the doors at the Ozark Urgent Care until the time I left the ER at South, I received excellent service. The staff at urgent care sat with me and kept me calm until the Ambulance arrived. Specifically a PA named Jamie. The EMTs were very courteous and helped me feel comfortable and safe. When I arrived at the hospital the nurses began care immediately and made me feel very comfortable and like they really cared about me. I don’t remember all their names, but they are top notch nurses. The icing on the cake was Dr. Sam Alexander. I have never had such a compassionate and kind doctor. He really took the time to hear me and to listen to all my questions and concerns. He made sure that I had the best care there and would receive the best care in follow up. He had an excellent bed-side manner and made me feel safe. From start to finish my experience was the best you could possibly have in an emergency situation.Damion MorrisGo to Mercy. That is allAshley Calderon Ortiz⭐️⭐️Setting here waiting for my 11 month old daughter to be seen. We got here at 11pm and it’s now almost 330am. There has been 3 people that got here after we did that has gotten seen before we have! My daughter has a temp of 104.5!!! They said the other people were sicker than she is…I’m sorry I didn’t see them bleeding or brought in on a stretcher!!! ADDITION FOR MY SECOND VISIT HOURS LATER. We go to the er hours later because her symptoms got worse breathing was heavier very weak fever of 104.5 again. The lady that came into type her symptoms into the computer and to listen to her goes to leave the room and she says “obviously shes not that sick shes not even putting up a big enough fight”. When sick my daughter sleeps barely moves. 8 hours later since she isn’t “important” enough to be seen before some others she was diagnosed with rsv and bronchiolitis! Some Cox staff really sucks.Josh PeckI’d give this place zero stars if I could. They left my pregnant wife and very sick 5 year old son for 2 hours only then to say it would be another 5 hours to even see a doctor. They then tried to keep them there when my wife said they were leaving (it was late at night) but would not do anything for my son any sooner than 5 hours. I had the same experience when I had to go in a few months ago. Whoever runs this clown show joke of an ER should be ashamed of themselves. Neglecting me is one thing, but when it comes to my wife and son, and especially considering all the other horror stories in the reviews here, I have to wonder how this place is still allowed to run under this current administration.Hannah ManisI went to the ER just a few days after I had my baby with tons of pain and pumping only blood instead of milk. I figured I had mastitis. And last time I had a baby I got sepsis, so infections are a big deal to me. Also my newborn had white spots in her mouth which I worried was thrush. I came in and there was no one there in the waiting room but me and my baby. I waited 30 minutes before being taken back to a room then when I finally got to a room I watched as 5 nurses laughed and talked for at least 45 minutes before I even had a nurse come check on me. Then I had blood drawn (which I think they even burst a vein in doing so), I had an IV put in, and then waited another 30 minutes to have an X-ray done, I was told by each nurse/technician that a doctor would come check my back out and something else… after all of that it was now like 12:30 a.m. I then waited at least 3 HOURS with a crying newborn baby, to have a nurse come in and RIP my iv out along with the tape and say “Okay you can leave now!” At 3:30 in the morning!!! I had to ask if there was any results from the X-ray or blood work and why I was pumping blood and she said she didn’t know! I had the other nurse come in and say you must just be engorged. And sent me home. No doctor and they didn’t check the other things they mentioned either. I am now receiving bills from this event when I had it 100% covered by my pregnancy Medicaid… horrible service and I’ve never seen anything like this before. I am probably only okay because I was already on an antibiotic for something else and it took away the mastitis.Michael Lumby⭐️⭐️Good luck . . .Bre LeeWould give them a 0 if i could: came to the emergency room because my mother was puking blood, they finally got her vitals her bp was 200over 120 after 2 hours sitting in the waiting room. Then another 2 hours they finally get her into a room and do an X-ray and bloodwork then told her nothing was wrong. The doctor is very nice but the nurse is very rude the staff as a whole are rude and unprofessional. We came in at 10:30pm Tuesday February 12th, it is now 6:22am Wednesday February 13th. She was supposed to be put into a room To stay overnight to be monitored yet we are still in an er room.Jamie ConnerThey really dont care. Wait times are awfulJoni Adney⭐️⭐️Went to the ER tonight with extreme vomiting, bad abdominal pain and I was dizzy and blurred vision. 183/99 BP and all medicine they gave me for nausea, I still threw up. The doctor said that because my blood and urine “wasn’t showing dehydration” that she was sending me home and I was told to “Take this and call your GI” (I am a UC patient), and despite me having and vomiting right there, she still unhooked me and sent me home. I am still very dizzy and had to walk myself out to my friend’s vehicle as the same doctor watched me struggle. Here I am home, still in the same situation I was with pain and nausea and dizziness, and no relief or answers. Dr. Porter was that ER doctor. I normally have great things to say about this hospital, but tonight, they dropped the ball. Very low dropped the ball.
