Before you go to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, you may want to know what the people who have already gone to this San Diego emergency room think.
Delphine LeeDO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL!!!! The hospital contracts workers that are not covered under your insurance (Pacific Emergency Providers). But they don’t tell you that. So you get serviced by them, then you are forced to pay out of pocket whatever rate they want to charge. Your insurance company cannot dispute their billing rate because they are not in-network. Also, your insurance company will not pay as much of the bill because they are out of network. I ended up having to pay 2.7 times what I should have paid on a recent emergency room visit. I purposely picked Scripps because it was “in-network” for my insurance company (Aetna). I should have paid $491, but ended up paying $1353 because of these contracted out-of-network workers. No one at Scripps warned me about this at any time when I was at the hospital.TheStardezine⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI can not say enough GOOD stuff about the 5th floor Dr.’s Nurse’s, and assistants ! My Dad was here three years ago and now my husband Ted has been here the past 7 days. The loving care they give to him is almost like it’s their Dad they’re caring for. I have to give ten stars for all the staff inc cooks, food, snacks And most of all attention. Very clean hospital with large windows nice views too. I say it’s just as nice as Green Hospital Torrey pines in La Jolla if not more Thank you to all!crystal marie⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThe only reason I will give a 5 star to this hospital is because of Paula R in the emergency department. She went out of her way to help my husband and I when everyone else wouldnt even acknowledge us. She is more than amazing. Thank you so much Paula for the parking garage help Jamin Ben Lavandera⭐️⭐️⭐️Compassion hardly seems to be the priority. Professional work average to good. Lack of Spiritual Direction. No presence of the Blessed Sacrament Even though it is a Roman Catholic Hospital! Cafeteria surely can be improved.Peter StoneBad experience with Behavioral health unit at Scripps Mercy. First they gave my sister the wrong discharge paperwork with someone else information on it!! Next no follow up on my sister so she missed her follow up consultation Friday. Since she missed her Friday appointment she was not given any more medication. So she has ran out and abruptly has no medicine in her body which I know is horrible. I have no idea why their are no refills on her medication that was not communicated to me or my sister. She went to refill and was denied by pharmacy?!?!? Called doctor she said to call Behavioral health. Called behavioral health they say to call social worker. Social worker says to call outpatient hospital or ER. Outpatient hospital says they can’t see her until Dec 4th and to call Scripps Mercy. We need someone at Scripps to approve this dam Refill and help my poor sister out please! My next step is to file a complaint with the medical boardErnie AyalaI would give a better review but this hospital contracts doctors that are out of network. So you get that good ol’ surprise bill even though you thought you were covered.Natalie TaylorThe doctors and nurses were great, but customer service on the phone is terrible. I got hung up on over 6 times. All I did was ask to be transferred to billing to make a payment plan. One lady sighed and hung up, the others didnt say anything and hung up. Just do your job?Karina Sanchez⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedHad my baby December 30th came in at 8 pm with contractions 5 minutes apart had my baby at 9:25 everyone in labor and delivery acted super quick and everyone super helpful had a great doctor and nurses wish I knew their names.Leara Lerma⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I had my baby there December 19th, went in the hospital December 16th, I was labor and and delivery department, most nurses were very helpful, others gave attitude. As for post partum everyone was helpful and couldn’t get enough of my daughter. My experience there was good. I just wish the food was betterAbigail Allardice⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAbsolutely wonderful experience!!! (This was my second delivery here). I wanted a natural labor and delivery with no meds. The nurses helped me accomplish just that and encouraged me along the way. 4 hours from check in at 5cm the baby was born and then another hour and a half we were both cleaned up and in our room for the night/next day. Perks: 1. Two beds to sleep in one for mom one for Dad or whoever is there supporting you. We also had 2 chairs plus a rocking chair to be able to move about the room or have a comfortable place for guests. 2. Meals here were amazing! They brought me marinated salmon, wild rice, perfectly steamed broccoli, tomato basil soup and fresh fruit for lunch. Teriyaki chicken, more soup, a garden salad (not a leaf of iceberg-I’m talking Nice greens), a generous helping of fresh blueberries, pudding and a roll. 3. The staff were always asking me if there was anything they could get us. Since we got to our room after normal dinner time we thought we would have to do a burger run bit I asked if there was any food and she brought us a sandwich each and several juice boxes. Then again during he middle of the day she brought another sandwich between meals! They refilled my pitcher of water several times and then would pour a glass for me when they brought it back in…I felt pampered! Shout out to nurses Christina, Jackie, and Fe. And Doctors Sandoval and Shaw. Thank you so much!!!Stephanie Marin⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedVery good care. Fell breaking both bones in leg. E.R. was a wash. Care on the 7th floor, R.N. Savannah-A plus!Carolina DragonEyeWorst hospital ever. Dr. Melendez, the worst doctor ever, not only broke my water to soon but never told me anything about it and I had to get a c-section. I never approved for her to break my water. My labor was delayed because I was only 5cm when the doctor broke my water and I was practically on the epidural for 12 hours and no pitocin to accelerate my contractions until the last hour they decided I needed a c-section. My daughter was in head down position and a c-section wasn’t needed until the doctor decided to break my water to soon. I had to request for another doctor to do the c-section procedure because Dr. Melendez did malpractice on me. As my baby was born, she had a small cut on her head which was caused by the doctor breaking my water, my daughter would cry each time the cut was accidentally touched. The hospital says they are baby friendly, but they are not. The nurses were pressuring me to give formula to my daughter as I had an argument with her that I would 100% breastfeed. There was no need to give my daughter formula, since she was full term. I was so happy when My baby and I could finally leave home.Karina Quilalang⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedIt was by far one of the best experiences and deliveries for me. Dr Sandoval was gentle, professional, and carrying. Shout out to all the labor and delivery nurses at Scripps mercy san diego- you all are very organized and compassionate- you deal with mothers in pain all day long and you all keep it together, made my experience one to smile about.John Mateikat⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI’m John Mateikat’s wife, Holly. I’ve been extremely ill, so my doctor sent me to Scripps hospital on 5th Ave. I am blown away by the unbelievable care they gave me. The doctors all displayed a genuine and caring interest in getting me well. The nurses were skilled, gentle, and kind, and the helpers seem to go above and beyond to help the patients be comfortable. One helper even brushed my matted hair and braided it so it wouldn’t get tangled further. That young lady may never know how much that helped me since I was too weak to take of it myself. My hat is off to this hospital and its staff; I will always be grateful.Jen Armock⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedNoah H. Was amazing nice friendly he took great care of my mom. Most nurses would of shaved her head to see where the wound was but not Noah he took his time wetting her hair without shaving her head so she didn’t have to walk around with a bald spot Thank you. Noah H. And Scripps Mercy for having great people working for you that care.Mitchell Bailey⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThey took very good care of me for 3 days.Rhonda CaseDo yourself a favor and avoid Scripps Mercy Hospital at all costs. There is a lack of professionalism, urgency, and overall consideration for the patient. My husband had to call EMS for the first time ever. Before evaluating him, we were told by paramedics that his chest pain, shortness of breath and vomiting was probably just the flu. The ER staff was just as bad. It was obvious that he was in pain, but he had to wait an hour before he was given any medication. He was treated in the middle of the ER hallway despite having empty rooms around him, and no one bothered to follow up on his defective IV tube. When my husband told the doctor that he was still having issues, the doctor told him the hospital is open 24/7 and discharged him with anti-nausea medicine. When I did write to the hospital to express my concerns to Patient Feedback, I NEVER received the courtesy of a response. This tells me how they really feel about their patients.Delia Robertson⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️My father got admitted here in obviously short notice emergency. The front staff were very nice obviously a wait time. The back staff were extremely nice and really sounded like they wanted my dad better. For me it is extremely important for the nurses to treat everyone like how they would want to be treated. Although we have to do follow up appointments and I mean a lot of them I do look forward seeing these caring nurses. Thank you for bettering my dads life.Kenneth Peck⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThe only department of the Hospital disserve a 5 Star rating is the Tramma Department and the 10th floor tramma staff . They took good care of me at a scary time for me . Thank You!Stephanie Cleveland⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Wish it was different circumstances that afford us this view but Benny & I are doing the best we can. The hospital and the staff have been patient and caring. Couldn’t ask for more. Here’s to Bens speedy recovery..perhaps a simple act such as this post it may reach the universe and some healing powers will be bestowed upon Benny. That’s my wish Deanna Anchors⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThe emergency room night staff is AMAZING! We are here from out of town for a conference and had an accident that brought us in. The staff is so friendly, attentive, efficient, and caring. For coming to an emergency room we had a good time. Thank you for your overall exceptional customer service!BeLikeWater99I don’t normally write reviews, but this was by far the WORST experience I had at a medical facility. The nurses, doctor’s, and other staff are very incompetent, and also gave major attitude using inappropriate language towards myself as well as other patients. I had to wait 4 hours just for a chest x-ray, and ER Dr. Haleigh Cole Kotter was overall unprofessional- rushing, and cutting me off when I tried to explain what my symptoms are. This place should be sued along with getting rid of the terribly incompetent staff, who definitely don’t care about a patient’s health.Amanda AndersonThe hospital staff are hit or miss. Some nurses are helpful, others give attitude. They didn’t bring a meal tray to my husband, the patient, for 2 days and when confronted they couldn’t explain why and the issue was only resolved after I demanded to speak to an ombudsman. It’s also a teaching hospital, they send 2 or 3 med students in and not the actual doctor. The med students were unprofessional and made my husband feel guilty for asking questions about his care. Obviously Scripps invests in their north county hospitals because that’s where their wealthy donors are but they let this hospital fall apart and staff it with sub-par employees. If you can go anywhere else do so.Barbara MelendezSitting outside the front of the hospital today. I was observing patients go home as I waited for my ride. I saw staff take the hospital bracelet off a patient and throw it in the trash outside the front door. Definately need training. On PHI and HEPPA.Thomas Cox⭐️⭐️Very bad waiting room long wait with strange people. Too many homeless and foreign people.Conrado BishopLabor and delivery is a joke. They could care less about your wife and her well beingThomas HoodI wonder if it’s customary (after your’e whisked away in a ambulance in an emergency not having time to bring a coat and wearing shorts) to be thrown in the freezing cold lobby in the early morning (after asking the nurse about a ride home and her asking “do you have a home”) and still feeling quite ill waiting for a shuttle that they say will be there in about an hour that finally gets there 2 hours later…shaking freezing and no body even offers you a blanket…and a few other things that I believe to be very unprofessional that I will follow up on in the next few days…. almost 70 and left felling traumatizedPrimier Peeare⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedA relative of mine suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound late at night and thankfully the staff was some of the best ever! Our family was obviously in shock but the doctor kept us updated after the surgery and throughout the recovery. He kept checking in on us and we really hit it off. What could have been the worst night of our lives actually ended up being a night of great conversation.Keri Klinger⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAll the nurses and assistants on the 7th floor were WONDERFUL. Special thanks to my nurse Renata. She was amazing as I suffered through my day after surgery. Best nurse I have ever encountered! Also, all the ladies in recovery were attentive and pleasant. They made my 4 hour wait for a room tolerable. ( Apparently it was a busy week) . Thanks to everyone at Scripps Mercyfor making my surgery, and stay as pleasant as possible.Annafel Lewis⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI was treated with compassion and care considering my circumstances.William KimballI visited Scripps Mercy emergency room 6/17/2019 and was absolutely appalled by the experience and my family will never visit again (My wife gave birth to my 2 youngest at Scripps). I feel its important to communicate my experience to help provide the facility feedback and to warn others. I realize that the vast majority of the staff are wonderful people and carry out a thankless job day in and out to serve the community and their fellow human. My first impression of the ER room was something you would see in a third world country, it was overcrowded, filthy and there wasn’t a formal method of triage. I visited the ER due to intense almost debilitating pain in my left lung and was worried I has having a heart attack, once I finally got the attention of the admissions staff the administrator struggled with basic data entry and had trouble reading the information off my ID I had to spell my name 5 times (William). Once I was admitted I explained the symptoms and the overlaying details of my problem multiple times. Once the Dr. finally stopped by to examine my symptoms I was met with skepticism, the Dr. was removed and cold and this was after 2 hours of agonizing pain. After almost 4 hours waiting for an xray and a CT scan I was still in agonizing pain with a very poor attempt in pain management. Once the Dr. completed reviewing the CT Scan and XRay it became very apparent he assumed I was some kind of junky looking to get high and I never been so humiliated in my life. I was told to follow up with PCP and to take some Ibuprofen. AVOID this sh!t hole at all cost.Jeannette Casillas⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThank you so much for making me well! I’m feeling so much better. God bless you all!Carlos CalderonWorst pm head nurses ever from labor in deliver short Asian lady so rude she ask my wife how much how her pain feel 1 Thur 10 and my wife said 8 and the head nurse said you do know your not getting your hand chop off i got so offended what does my wife pain gotta do with a chop hand I felt so Desrespectful she even y’all at her worst place everAllison GriggsThey were supposed to have PT come to my mother’s room, didn’t show that day…. they gave her her eye drops wrong to the point that she told me she couldn’t see. She had to complain so that they would finally give her her discharge information, she’s home now…with a cough she didn’t have going in and they FORGOT HER PAIN MEDICATION. They gave her all the medication that she has at home but forgot what she needed. Now I’m up at 2am trying to figure out what to do because they now can’t help us.Jake JimenezWatch out for some of these nurses and doctors. They are only human and can make mistakes. Not everyone has a “steady hand” as we found out when a nurse cut too much healthy tissue during surgery instead of just the dead tissue. What’s worse is that the nurse could not admit her mistake which caused me pain and bleeding. Shame on her.James T. KirkWhat a difference a day makes. Second time here, 3/5/2019, a blood stained BP cuff was used on me, during “triage” and I use that term very loosely. Still waiting FIVE HOURS later to discuss my sensitive issue, and zero clue about an ETA or anything rational. They could give no scripps less. Asked for a charge nurse twice… crickets. Plain wrong. Treated lower than an animal this time. That is a shame. I had such an outstanding experience here before. What an insult to my humanity. Walked out after wasting 6 useless hours of my life. I charged my phone TWO TIMES. I wasn’t seen. Called the ED twice and was hung up on immediately after requesting the charge nurse. Left a message for two patient advocates. I intend to file an official complaint regarding these unacceptable, discriminatory issues.May R⭐️⭐️⭐️I gave birth to my first baby here. Staff was incredibly kind and everything went smoothly. One of the night shift nurses encouraged breastfeeding almost aggressively while the morning shift was more versatile and offered actual help instead of just being yelled at for struggling with the latch. The other problem we have is that this hospital made a mistake with my daughters birth certificate and wrote the wrong gender. Had a huge issue reverting it back and now my daughter’s birth certificate is 2 pages long… when I took the hospital tour they told me a person was going to come pick up the birth certificate information and review it with me but nobody picked it up on my last day I had to ask around where I should go drop off the paperwork and then they made that mistake..Christie Dent formerly Reschke⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThey can be a little slow sometimes but are the most caring, wonderful people of any hospital I’ve been to. I love all of the people in this hospital, and the food??? Yummy!!! Helpful and more knowledgeable than most!!! I had a group of doctors working on my injury and making my surgical plans. Mercy is, by far, the best hospital I’ve been to in years.sarah kilpatrick⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I was there in jan. 04 i wont lie you guys took the time to take care of my injuries and you guys did good i just dont remember most of my injuries who do i vontact for the recordsvivian labit⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️When i had my baby i had amazing nurses!!!!! All the staff really came through for me it was just like being at home and treated like a queen hehe. The only down side was the doctor who was heavy set with glasses short hairedsuppose to deliver my baby didnt do her job. She was there just doing whatever and not helpi g the nurses pretty much did everything she just came and sowed me up ugh. Other then that fantasticMarvin Higgins⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAmazing staff!!!!!Staff and doctor treated me awesome. Thank You so muchBill Zbacnik⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedFantastic DOCTORS, friendly nurses, GREAT HOSPITAL!!!Alma Moody⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThe nursing staff here are the best, everyone is so helpfulParris MorganTerrible hospital and staff. My car flipped over several times and the doctors at the trauma clinic told me I can go back to work in ten days with a punctured lung and two fractured ribs. The staff is rude, the rooms are filthy and if your black they treat you like garbage. Stay away from this hospital. They told me to take ibuprofen for my injuries. I’m in constant pain all day and night.Catalina Romero⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedVerry good . The receptionist/ / the doctor’s… ⚕️S⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAmazing hospital one of the best. The care I received I am so thankful for I can’t be thankful enough they saved my life and I felt so cared for. Thank you mercy hospital. Ignore the reviews, this is the place to go if you are in need of quality care. Sure there’s always something to complain about, but I have none, they saved my life.Kim Ricv⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedMy daughter had surgery here a few days ago and we were very impressed with the nurses who cared for her. Both Nancy and Ellen were extremely friendly, comforting and attentive to her. That helps make a negative into a more positive experience.angela neelyWhere do I begin? Which stay? From one hour wait times to change a diaper to accidentally ripping my mothers GI tube, and forgetting to relay messages to nurses and doctors. The communication between shifts is mind boggling to say the least. Then there’s the ER. Where communication should be vital it’s nearly nonexistent. I got no information about my mother’s gapping hole from her incision. My mother has diabetes and no one bothered to check her insulin or feed her or give her water while her 12 hour stay in the ER. Nick the assistant was awesome though. Still waiting for those CT scan results from when she came out of her sedation. This place is a wrongful death suit waiting to happen.Harmony JohnsonI had a grandmal seizure the day after Christmas while in the ER. This hospital ER released me just after without treatment or evaluation while I was postictal did not coordinate me a ride and let me out in a confused and disoriented state. No human being regardless of their situation deserves to be treated like that and put in danger because of a lack of compassion in the department! Shame on you!Tony Nguyen⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedIn the year 2018, I was hospitalized and treated five different times from a head surgery tobbroken few bones in my body due to my impaired vision and I am homeless. I would like to share these experienced with all San Diego reviewiers. I was on the 6th floor room 608 for 34 days. All the staff were very professional and kindness. The nurses explained the side effect of all my medication, the room always cleancleancripps. Scripps Mercy of San Diego fly me back and reunited with my family in Hawaii. Special thanks to my social worker Nina, Dr. Nerdi for giving me hope and make this dream happened. Oh yeah, I WAS homeless. Thank you for reading this long review but it’s a true story.Brandi Chavez⭐️⭐️I came in here because of the high star rating as compared to other emergency rooms. We were given a bed quickly, but after that it was a waiting game all day. It took forever for xrays to come back, they put the wrong size blood pressure cup on my MIL so it took an inaccurate reading, and instead of wasting more of my time by sending the order to their pharmacy, they give you paper prescriptions to go fill yourself. Now we are waiting to be discharged and still have to wait to get the prescriptions. The staff was nice but the girl that helped us seemed like she had no clue about anything. She couldn’t answer any questions about my MIL x rays or even tell me where the pharmacy was. After going to Rady’s I guess I’m spoiled and need to find a similar emergency room for adults. Oh and there was no where for the family members to rest except a rolling stool for 4-6 hours!David Wayne⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I am a healthcare engineer and build hospitals, therefore I have a long history working with medical professionals. Scripps is good, it is a training hospital as are many facilities, it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of some hospitals, but it also doesn’t have that price tag. The nurses are great. Some of the doctors are great, some are only good. I came in with chest pain and irregular heart beat, I was All but Instantly put in an Exam room, and a portable x-ray was brought in. They admitted me and worked to get me entirely healthy, not just my heart, because I have phenomena as well as two blood clots. They helped set up primary care doctors because I am only visiting SD, but need to be on strong blood thinners. I have cheep insurance right now because I am not working. And I have never done any work in this facility. But the staff treated great with real concern for my well being. Since very little in life is ever “perfect” I don’t give a perfect scores. But I give Scripps my strongest endorsement for anyone needing medical attention.William Godfrey⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI was taken by ambulance to Sripps Mercy for a possible stroke. I was treated with respect and dignity the entire time I was there. The staff was excellent. Thank you Scripps for the outstanding care
