UF Health Shands Emergency Center – Springhill Reviews

Before you go to UF Health Shands Emergency Center – Springhill, you may want to know what the people who have already gone to this Gainesville emergency room think.

Cesar Cardoso Brought my girlfriend here with fever and severe chest pain. After 3 hours of wait I ask one of the ladies in the front and she was annoyed that I wanted to know how much longer it would take. She said that there’s patients waiting that arrived before me. What kind of an answer is that? “If you think we are being incompetent with you, just ask this other guy”. After they called her, she was just moved to a space that is roughly 3 by 6 feet, that was 30 min ago.Yolanda Louis When I came in to be seen, I was in so much pain. I was checked in at 1914 with a blood pressure of 202,I was told that I had 4 people ahead me.About 2 hours went by and I asked the lady in check in to see how much longer it would be, she was told that I was the next person to be seen, boy was that a lie. They began to call people to the back, that came after me(emergencies I understand) but in this case, not all wasn’t. After waiting another 20mins, I went to the front desk again, she stated that I was next, to give them about 15mins to get the chair clean,I was in upset and still in pain so I asked her is there someone to come check my pressure again, that took another 20mins and of course it was still the same and the pain was worse. The Nurse told me that there were people with certain circumstances who needs to be seen before me and to let her talk to her Charge Nurse, well she came back and grabbed another patient that came after me again, now it’s 2220 and I am still waiting with a high pressure and is still a lot of pain. I asked for a number to make a complaint and was given the Nurse Manager business card, I am so furious with the staff that is working here at the moment. The only reason they received 1 Star was because of the front desk personnel.Cmore Bucks Horrible, came in for a back injury and waited so long I forgot what I was their for… thank you for nothingRobert Dunn BEWARE unless you are looking to collect on a life insurance policy DO NOT bring your family members here. I now understand what hospital Senator Maureen Walsh was referring to when she said that the nurses and in my case the doctors sit around playing cards all day. I took my 11 month old son here on Tuesday April 23, 2019 because he had been vomiting for several hours, could not hold down any food, liquids, or pedialyte and was becoming dehydrated. We told them that he had been swimming the day before and we were concerned that he may be experiencing secondary drowning. They checked him in and took his temperature then had us sit in a waiting room that only had 6 people in it for over an hour. They finally took us to a room so that we could lay him down and make him comfortable, but they still did nothing for him or even checked him out. I had to walk out of our room several times to ask if anyone was going to check him out and every time the nurses were sitting at computers doing nothing, but had the same quick response “the doctor will be with you shortly.” After waiting for over 4 hours and this hospital doing absolutely nothing for him other then take his information, temperature, and my insurance card we left and took him somewhere else. This hospital, the nurses, and doctors should be absolutely ashamed with the care that they are giving to patients. I could have gotten better service at McDonald’s.Caroline Spencer I do not trust shands er doctors..i am very sick..i told the doctor i dont want to die and he said we r all going to die..like duh i know that..but how rude..Kim Dupree I would give 0 stars if possible, but 1 is required to leave a review. Don’t come here. The triage nurses were amazing so I was extremely hopeful that the rest of the staff would be on the same par. They were extremely gentle and compassionate but the rest of the treatment was cold and lackluster. The two male physicians did not listen to me and at one point, I was so frustrated that I asked to leave as my pain was not being treated. I “denied treatment” of two diagnostic procedures performed less than two months ago and two medications, neither of which was for pain. I will never come here again and will not recommend anyone to come here. Can’t wait to see the bill I get for having an IV run (for nothing) and two physicians condescendingly telling me how they’re trying to help me!Darryl Crowder This emergency room is quick but the people dont care how they talk to you or how they treat you. The nurse laughed at me for not having my son vaccinated before asking if it was because of my religion. As she was administering the medicine for my son she was squeezing his mouth extremely to hard while telling him to calm down.. HE’S ONLY A YEAR OLD! The triage guy is usually nice but he seems like he is having a bad morning with all that huffing and puffing and smart remarks. The only person that was nice was the actual doctor. I felt very uncomfortable and if you are African American with small children i wouldnt recommend this emergency room.Richelle1360 D I would give this place less than 1 if I could. I came in by ambulance. I asked (begged) to be taken to Shands. Instead I was taken to Springhill. I was so out of it I didn’t know my own name or where I had been taken. I was unconscious 98% of the time. I had been throwing up for 2 days because of a virus, but they just assumed it was because my blood sugar was high from being sick. They kept me there about 5 hours. I have no idea what was done to me. They then woke me up and kicked me out, like a homeless person. I was not able to call my family to come get me because I was so out of it, I couldn’t dial the phone. I begged them not to make me go, I was afraid I’d die. They wouldn’t just let me sleep in a room until I could think clear enough to reach my family come an hour away. I am on oxygen, and they sent me home with NO oxygen. They armed, “Do you use oxygen?” And when I said yes, they said “Well you’re not taking ours!” They made me take a taxi, which I never did before. I was terrified and I kept falling unconscious. I was so out of it, I even got lost in my own neighborhood. I would not subject A DOG to their treatment. This goes against the Hippocratic Oath – first do no harm!gummywormz⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER Recommendedin and out. great experience here.johnny carr If I could give a half of star I would. My wife was involved in a car accident and they took vitals and gave her a prescription. She is complaining about neck and back pain. She was not given an X-Ray at all and is home in pain. I will be taking her somewhere else not back here. And, when I called and asked why wasn’t she given an X-ray the current Charge Nurse Jessica said, and I quote “I don’t care if you’re her husband” when I asked. Unprofessional period.Josie Jackson⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI hate emergency rooms but everyone here was so nice and polite! We were in and out in a hour and 45 minutes..SAY WHAT!!! I’ve had some bad experiences with health care personnel having a nonchalant attitude or really not being empathetic about my needs and pain but the way they took care of my son was on a level of professionalism that speaks volumes about them ACTUALLY caring about the patients. Blessings to everyone from the front desk, nurses, to the doctor. I just wat to say thank you so much!Taylor Seiler The incompetency is highly alarming. I was in for post birth issues and was actually asked why my pee was a funny color (red because of blood). Among other things 3 tries to put in an iv (and ended up not being placed right) trashy clientele yelling. The only good i experienced was the Dr, select few staff members, and ambulance staff. I would recommend choosing a different ER.Michelle Gilley The triage nurses were nice, but the place was so dirty. There were used blankets, soiled pads, trash, and vomit bags laying all over the place. The bathrooms were disgusting. I didn’t even wait to be seen, because I felt like I was going to catch some kind of disease sitting in the waiting room. There was no reason they couldn’t have cleaned all of that up, as long as we sat there. Downright nasty and unsanitary!Mike Hodgins What a joke… Should be a Negative Star option… Perfect example of what’s wrong with the health care INDUSTRY………Merve Ozdemir⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I think we all have different experiences but we need to consider how all staff are busy! In overall, I was happy with my visit because it only took 2 hours. paramedic were did a great job but I can’t tell the same thing for Nurses and P.Assistant. They were far away from how to communicate with a patient respectfully and kindly. I know they are busy that is not the way. 30-30-30minutes between each to seeNurse-P.Assistant-Nurse. My review is not only related to waiting time. I consider their knowledge and skills to explain my situation, necessary actions and medication. I gave 4 star only because Paramedic did an excellent job.Frances Newman⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedSo maybe Shands opened up the Springhill ER to make up for the one at the main hospital (which is hell on earth). When we arrived NO ONE was in the wait room. It was empty. My son was seen almost immediately. We waited five minutes at most. The staff was courteous. We were escorted to a private room. The primary doctor was training other doctors so an entire team came in to see my son. This was an entirely different experience than the one I had at the main hospital on Archer Road. Highly recommend this place!Nicole Wulff⭐️⭐️They took x-rays and when I asked for disk of images so I could hand-deliver to orthopedic surgeon at the the following day’s appointment, they said they didn’t have capacity to make a disk. They said it’d be “no trouble at all” for the other drs office to call and get the images, same day. That was not true. They put a cast on too high up my calf so that it was poking my thigh when I bent my leg to walk w the crutches. They had to take off the first cast and redo it. Today at orthopedic surgeon, they want to do another round of X-rays since they don’t have access to originals. Can’t wait to fight w my insurance about these things. Won’t be going here next time.Adam Bush⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedDON’T BE FOOLED BY ALL THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!! Springhill Emergency Dept strives to change the long standing idea that visiting the hospital is ALWAYS meant to be a miserable experience. The SHED is passionate about merging medicine and great customer service in a way that’s never been done. Many of the negative reviews on here are just blatantly untrue. Wait time are obviously based on case by case basis, but be assured, if you’re having a TRUE medical emergency, you won’t wait. People saying that they’ve waited for more than 2+ hours is not factual. It’s important to realize that Springhill is a fully functional ER with life saving capabilities. Unfortunately it’s not a first come first serve basis for treating people. But wouldn’t you always want your loved one that is having a real emergency to be treated first? I think what confuses most people now a days is the definition of what a emergency is. I think it’s hard for people to distinguish what constitutes “emergency” vs “urgent care”. The goal is to educate without being condescending but that’s always going to be a tough goal to achieve. Staff here is always friendly. Keep in mind that they’re all normal people too. Everyone has off days from time to time. They’re not robots that run solely off adrenaline and canned beef. Every aspect of the staffing here is about teamwork. Everyone from admissions to lab to nursing to physician is dedicated to what they do, and it shows. Having personally brought family here, I can’t recommend Springhill enough. Fast, friendly, and knowledgable, this place is what other hospitals wish they could be. *And as a side note, Springhill Emergency Center has X-RAY, CT SCAN, ULTRASOUND. No MRI* 🙂 You’re welcome.Chad Rains⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThis was the best ER experience I have ever had. ALL of the staff I came in contact with were courteous and professional. I was in a room being seen by a doctor in under ten minutes. I had to get a CT scan while I was there, which I was really nervous about, and the radiology staff comforted me which gave me the assurance I needed at the time. Best ER in town hands down!FIrst Last⭐️⭐️Don’t go here if you have an actual emergency. This place isn’t a true ER — it’s a glorified clinic. If you need stitches or have a broken arm, this might be the place for you. But stay away if you have something emergent. To start, I came in with chest pain — and NO ONE EVEN CHECKED ME WITH A STETHOSCOPE. I was examined by three nurses, one physician and one paramedic. I came here with chest pain, since it was the closest emergency facility. There is zero sense of urgency. I stopped here when I began experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath while I was driving. I had the classic heart attack symptoms — crushing pressure in my chest, pain in my neck and jaw, shortness of breath, etc. When I arrived, I told the person at the front desk what was going on. “Oh, OK. Have a seat over there.” She notified someone that I needed to be triaged. Apparently there were three of us with chest pain — and only one EKG machine. The care staff just casually walked back and forth, barely glancing at me. They HAD been notified that a patient with severe chest pain was waiting in the lobby. FINALLY, the EKG machine was free. It had been a few minutes until I was finally taken back to the triage nurse. So much for “time is muscle.” If I was having an active heart attack, I likely would have died in the lobby! The triage nurse took my vital signs and I finally got connected to the EKG machine. Of note, my blood pressure was WAY above normal. They took me to a room in the back and hooked me up to a blood pressure monitor and heart rate monitor. They also took blood right away. My blood pressure continued to escalate. The doctor saw this. She never even offered medication to help decrease it — it was trending higher and higher. Finally, they decided to transfer me to the main Shands hospital. At least the staff there was on point.Brian Fox I’m not one to complain about physicians, but they need to fire the personnel… Heard the sh*%+pie doctor discussing my condition with the nurses… I don’t go to doctors because they have been responsible for the deaths(in part) of some of my closest family members… Let it be known u mess up with my father I will not sit and let it fly… and I’m sure u retards were in violation of some patient doctor confidentiality clause… Keep it up UFSarah M.⭐️⭐️-What was good: the wait time (very quick), the doctor (she was kind and attentive). -What was appalling: the way the nurse assigned to us behaved. He acted like our questions were a burden – exasperated from the start. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because he has a difficult job with, I’m sure, many challenging & rude patients…but as the night went on, he continued to be impatient / condescending with any questions (not even requests, just questions), to the point where we had to force ourselves to be our own advocates despite the feeling that there was no point. I prefer to focus on what’s good but, honestly, I’m writing review because of the negative. However, I’d like to emphasize again how nice it was to have such a short wait time & that the doctor did her job well.Natalie Starnieri⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedMy 2 year old son needed stitches on his forehead, the staff was very friendly and my son felt at ease with everyone that cared for us, from registration to post care. Appreciated everyone and the timely ness of treatment!Geoffrey Daniels⭐️⭐️⭐️The nurses and medic who treated me were really compassionate and friendly. The ER doctor was, for the most part, very good. I’d give the staff 4 to 4.5 stars. I’m concerned that some of the staff didn’t follow infection control protocol. My nurse wore gloves to take out or adjust my IV, but the person who inserted it did not. Neither did the radiology tech who unhooked my main IV to insert contrast die. I was a little frustrated when the ER doc didn’t offer any recommendations for follow-up treatment–after they weren’t able to find the source of the medical problem I was having. I had to ask twice. She sort of rushed me through the process–even though the ER wasn’t that busy. The RN, however, explained my after-care instructions very well and listened to my questions. The facility itself, however, was pretty dirty. There were visible stains on a supposedly fresh sheet on the ER bed. I had to ask for a new one. The floors were filthy–and so were the chairs in the waiting area. In one of the patient bathrooms, someone had urinated on the seat. It wasn’t cleaned up until I mentioned something about it.Time Truths⭐️⭐️⭐️The place was quiet and, by generalized comparison, the check in and triage was relatively quick. They have many services and imaging equipment available. The staff was overall helpful, polite, and seemed professionally competent. But… multiple staff were just waiting around, checking out YouTube videos and shopping for car parts on Craigslist. While listening to nearby patients writhing in pain, I witnessed the numbing effect such an occupation has upon an individual’s compassion. There were also several odd bits of trash lying about the floor, although the patient “fast track” bay was labeled clean. The most perturbing piece being a used thermometer cover sleeve that had previously been in someone’s mouth. The wrapper to a syringe was also a troubling sight… Despite the several relatively minor flaws, I would recommend this facility. Most especially if one has a truly dire medical emergency. They are well trained, and excellently equipped.Tyquisha Young Will never go back here again very rudeAlec Lauriault I had been throwing up for over 24 hours. Could not keep any fluids down. My sodium and glucose levels were dangerously low. I go in on a Sunday afternoon and the place is packed. They tell me they are not allowed to give out wait times…? I waited for over 2 hours before having a relative drive me to NFRMC. THIS PLACE IS NOT AN EMERGENCY CENTER! DONT GO IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY!!!Rhett Klemans⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThis is my go to ER. Always the best care and compassion. Convenient location and low wait time!Sherri Monroe Dr. Noel Braseth is hands down the worst M.D. that I have ever experienced. Wouldn’t recommend using this man as a physician. Did not treat any of my symptoms and basically I was treated as I was wastimy. His time. He was rude and nasty to me and my family members… Will not be returning there. Also I had to go to another er to be treated for the things I went to home to be treated for. Very disappointed.Melinda Wms⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAmazing. I live about 2 hours south in Leesburg and i will definitely drive the 4 hr round trip. Its quicker than any other place. The people are amazingly nice and very willing to answer questions and explain things!!Frank Amazon I came in at around 2 p.m with extreme pain on my tailbone and explained that I could not sit down. I stood up for 7 hours… 7 HOURS!!! I ended up leaving out of the disbelief, fatigue, and hunger. There was a lady crying there out of the pain she was feeling and nobody was helping her. Another older gentleman ask if they can help him get a cab because he could not wait any longer; The lady bluntly said, “no I cannot”. After, there was a lady in the lobby who was getting a phone call and the staff transfer the called to the phone at the desk. She could not even picked up the phone and the nurses and staff did nothing. The service is garbage. People just waiting for death to come and grab them by the hand in that ER room.BMW SportRider⭐️⭐️My father (76 yrs old) presented to this ER with severe neck pain after recently having pneumonia. Additionally, he reported being bitten by a spider about a week ago. He did not see the spider, however, leading me to be concerned that this may actually be MRSA. I arrived to the ER shortly before he was discharged. The nurse was very nice and explained to me that he was given IV Toradol with significant decrease in pain. I was also told by my father that the doctor was nice and labs were drawn, but I did not get an opportunity to speak with her and find out exactly what was done, nor was it in the report that was sent home with him. My dad asked her about his residual productive cough from the pneumonia on his way out. He was told the x-ray was clear and when he asked what could be causing the cough to continue she shrugged her shoulders and turned away from him. Overall, my dad left there feeling he received fair to good treatment and was in less pain. He was not happy regarding the lack of concern regarding residual productive cough. This was frustrating to me as well. I wasn’t expecting some huge work up or a definitive answer. Just hoped for slightly more than a shrug of the shoulders. Additionally, there was a tech or nurse, not sure exactly what his position was who was very rude when I asked for directions out. He said, with an attitude, “see all those exits signs with the big waiting room sign hanging over there…follow that!” I’m not a stupid person and usually not directionally challenged but when you’re in an unfamiliar ER, worried about your elderly father, and there’s multiple doors and exit signs and people and equipment everywhere it can be disorienting. You just might not see the not so “big waiting room sign” hanging about halfway down the hall. I was actually going to rate the ER 3 stars but I’m going to decrease it further because of this. I understand that there’s a lot going on in an ER and often there isn’t time to explain things at length, but that is no excuse for flat out rudeness. And I’m not speaking from inexperience. I have worked in the hospital setting, in the ER (level 1 trauma), ICU, and medical and psychiatric units. I have never behaved in such a manner.Elliott Myers⭐️⭐️Good service, but bill was outrageously expensive for a simple examination. Received two bills, one for the hospital fee and another for the actual exam. Called to question why, and the lady said that she could lower the hospital bill a bit for me and to just send in the discounted amount. I did that, and now I have a letter from a collection service out of Tampa saying I still owe them money and they will hurt my credit. Will never be going here again, or recommend it to anyone, far too expensive and I feel lied to as well.Cindy Murrill⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedQuick response, has all the MRI, exray equipment , etc. right there. No nonsense doctors and professional nursing staff. I had a cracked sternum and was in severe pain. 9:00 am no wait, examed, tested, prescribed, boom! Out of there by 11:00 am.Donna A⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedMy visit was for what turned out to be a broken bone. I was seen almost immediately and happy with my care. I have had a few friends who have gone there and they all felt the same way.Alana James Really terrible service. Went in for chest pains that ive had for days. Had a paramedic say another patient had “legit chest pains” and then was left in the waiting room while the other patient was seen promptly. I ended up leaving. These people are inconsiderate and unprofessional.Peter Bureau⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedSuperb and caring doctors and nurses. Well equipped amd modern facilities. I am from out of town and they took care of my emergency quickly.Jovanni Cruz I broke my toe and it took 5 hours to get x-rays back. On top of that they did nothing to fix my toe. They wrapped my toe up and sent me home. I got zero sleep due to the pain. I went home with no pain killer. It’s terrible facility. I would never go there again.Recardo Murdado Dishonest, under staff as far as doctors, crap load of useless office workers that dare to diagnose people in pain, and they price like that are good doctors. Stay away. Fine pain killers for the night and wait to go to a walk in clinic for maximum of $300 (if treatment is needed). This place is a joke and I guarantee may lawsuits will take this scumbags out soon.Theresa Hall Slow. You can arrive early in the day and might not leave till tomorrow.Brianna Trusty Honestly I’d put zero stars if I could. My fiance went in with a fever of 104°F from a severe bladder infection at 8PM. She was made to wait 5+ hours before being seen because the whoever triaged her made a mistake. Let that sink in. My fiance had to wait *five hours* with a life threatening fever because the staff couldn’t be assed enough to do their job. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.Jay Jett⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThis is far and away the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to. They told me they don’t serve eggs Benedict! On top of that they stabbed me in both legs and in my arm. The only reason I’m giving this establishment 5 stars is because they did an excellent job vaccinating me against rabies.Patricia Daniels⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedExcellent Staff. Everyone was great to us and kept us informed.Kyle E⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedStaff was extremely friendly and I waited only two minutes to be seen by a doctor. HIGHLY recommended!Christine H⭐️⭐️⭐️Very knowledgeable but staff could be a bit more upbeat.Joe Blow If I could leave zero stars I would. I arrived in this e.r. shortly after falling from a ladder and dislodging my shoulder. I literally waited 2 hours in a near empty e.r. room before I gave up and drove myself to north Florida regional where they took me right in. Shands is the last place you want to end up should you need urgent care and have not arrived via ambulance. Lesson learned.Clayton Shepherd⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedVery Professional. Top notch!David Schmitt⭐️⭐️⭐️Mixed bag. Have had some excellent care here, as well as some that I felt was inadequate.Dona Anderson⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Only thing we had a problem with was, left after asking 3 people if we were done, then got a call telling us to come back cause we weren’t finished.Patricia Jackson Abso-freaking-lutely HORRIBLE !!! YOU JACKSSSES need to close up shop and get the hell out of MY STATE !!!Joseph Rowe⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThey did a good job handling my wife at her 2 ER visits. Quick and quality service.David Kuhne⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedMy wife has chronic migraines, and this ER is fantastic. The staff are consistently more attentive, less rushed, and more compassionate than other local options.Zac Stiller Terrible care and beyond slow. Be prepared to wait 12 hours for anything even if you are the only one in the waiting room and if they give you ibuprofen Be prepared to spend $1700. Go to North Florida.Rufus Goodwine⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI went in in Thanksgiving morning to have my finge stitched. They took me back before I had completed my paper work. I was in and out in about an hour. Doctor and nurse were professional.Diana R⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedGreat experience all around.Tiffany Revelle Very rude nurses and understaffed. I pay good insurance and to be treated poorly is outrageous. Staff sitting around doing nothing. I am outraged been here for 5 hourskenneth morrissette⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedWent into this emergency room for an asthma attack and they did a Ct scan of my chest and wound up finding a blood clot in my left lung that I was completely unaware of….to be honest these nurses and doctors probably saved my life….had I not gone there I would’ve wound having a stroke which would have possibly killed meBrittany Greek⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI am astonished. Literally 2 minute wait to get back. Staff was BEYOND AMAZING! I have never been so impressed with any type of medical facility!Scott Kaufman Waited literally 7 hours and watch people go in and out before me. Place is a joke!!!
