Before you go to UF Health Shands / Trauma Center, you may want to know what the people who have already gone to this Gainesville emergency room think.
Miernik MediaCame in I 8:00 p.m. to get my mom checked out and it’s currently 6:00 a.m. and we still don’t know when we will be able to leave.. we didn’t even get in the back of the ER until 2am. Don’t waste your time coming here go to North Florida Regional and you’ll be out in less than an hour and they have better staff. Don’t know how they’re know for amazing facilities and doctors and they have the worlds worst ERs that have been like this for at least 10 years. Would NEVER come again.Megan ChanAs an alumni, I really do love UF, so I hate to leave this review. I’m not sure where to begin. I had to bring my sister to this emergency room because she had intense abdominal pain. The lobby was very full and very cold. None of the staff offered us blankets, but some waiting patients got some for us from an unlabeled cabinet when they noticed we were trying to keep warm. We were seen pretty quickly to take blood samples. Not sure if it’s worth noting, but I saw a few medium-sized bugs skittering across the floor on our way back. After taking blood, we were taken back to the lobby to wait. Two of the three TVs weren’t working, so there wasn’t much in the way of entertainment. My sister’s pain was coming in terrible waves, and I felt completely helpless. After a few visits to the front desk asking if anything could be done, they told me bluntly that there were 30+ people ahead of me in line and that some had been waiting 13 hours so far. We left and went to the Kanapaha location, which is significantly nicer. It took about two hours for us to be taken to an exam room. After that, it’s more waiting, but at least the doctor saw us sooner than they would have if we had stayed at the main location. Eventually we were transferred back to the main location, thankfully skipping the lobby mess and going straight to the exam room there. By this time, it had been about nine hours, and I saw some of the same people sitting in the lobby from when we had left earlier. For several hours after that, it was more waiting, taking a ton of blood samples, and seeing all kinds of people and telling them the same story over and over. I understand that everyone is working like crazy, but the experience was terrible. I would not wish it upon anyone during a medical emergency.Zach GoodallThe doctors were timely, caring, and knew what they were doing… while the rest of the staff was lazy and had no sense of urgency. And all I was given was two IVs – I didn’t even get my own room and was charged heavily for my visit. Forced to sleep on a chair while screaming vomiting, and the nurse took her sweet time to respond. And the ladies up front were too busy watching TV on their computers to help either. We attempted to leave at 4 am, but the stuff was in no rush to help us out. And when a new staff came in in the morning, the tempo changed and everyone was getting in and out in a timely fashion – including myself within 30 minutes. Utterly ridiculous. I’ll drive to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville next time rather than the 10 minute drive to Shands.Kenny WIt cannot get any worse. How can a hospital with so many fine surgeons and centers of excellence have the awful ER right under their nose? We were there two nights ago and did not see adoctor for 7 hours, but briefly, and finally 14 hours in were put in a bed in the ER and finally admitted a day later. And if you are not infected going in, u will be. The Board of Directors needs to get some experts in to fix this.robert Tsmith1 doctor per building (if that), staff shows up to calls when they feel like it (if at all), ZERO communication either among themselves or to patients, ZERO efficiency, ZERO customer service, 50/50 shot you will even meet your attending nurse at any point during their 12 hour shift and an even lower probability that they will not have an immense attitude problem, highly improbable that you will see the same person more than once, you WILL wait for hours/days for service, at this hospital you are a number in a chop shop, and are treated as such. Here they will get to you when they fell like it and not a minute sooner (more than likely later). If they had a star labeled STAY AWAY i would have used that one.Christopher TysowskiBest in class hospital with the worst in class ER. I’d heard nothing but good things about Shands, and when I saw the hospital the first time, I thought to myself that it looked like some extravagant corporate building, but the service I got was the standard of Walmart. This was my second visit. A few years ago I’d come there to deal with another issue, but that time I’d waited in the lobby for 17 hours before being admitted and I wound up at the hospital for 2 days total and it was simply because I wasnt seen right away. They’re under staffed and uninspired, I swear either these employees are underpaid or they just hired the first people who came in through the doors. I sat for 7 hours and was seen one time for my symptoms. I was never admitted, I was simply brushed under the rug like everyone else in the lobby. In my 7 hours at the ER not one person in that lobby was admitted. Eventualy I decided to leave because my back hurt and I was not willing to cause myself extra injury with my back problems to add to the flu symptoms or whatever I had been feeling that day. It’s sad to see no one from the hospital responding to these reviews, it’s sad to see that 5 years apart from visits they still have no clue how to fix what’s wrong with this place. I’ll never go back again, even if they do fix these issues, I’d hate to be in there at all.Craig CheyneTook my girlfriend in for excruciating back pain. The reception nurse was extremely rude and flat out told her theres nothing they could do for her anyway. Very unprofessional after waiting 2 hours and not even being in a room with her crying in pain and not able to stay still when i asked the nurse if she had any idea how long it may be she was extremely rude. “Its going to be a long time” i was then told “her being in pain was not the nurses problem “. We left and she is currently suffering through the pain herself at home. I will never go back to this er and advise anyone else to look elsewhere for help. How can a “world class hospital ” have such a terrible er?. Wish i could give 0 starsBryce ReddingWORST ER EVER, I promise you if you aren’t on the literal verge of death they will make you wait LONG hours to be seen. I got my blood work done in the first 20 min of getting here but had to wait 8 hours for an ER physician to tell me they were prescribing me medication….. No matter your condition go somewhereKylee OppermanAbsolutely horrible front desk staff. The front desk staff embarrasses the UF name. So far have been waiting for 4 hours after having an incredible traumatic injury. When I asked about my spot in line, I was yelled at in fron of the entire staff and waiting room. Disgusting.Rob ReyLongest wait ever not worth coming. Worst place to come to if you genuinely need help. Garbage service. 5 hour wait. Do not recommend at all to anyone.Danielle SharpeAbsolutely horrible! 7 hour wait they’ve taken vitals TWICE blood drawn and NO ROOM, all information passed in the emergency department in the open! can you say HIPPA violation? Patient confidentiality is a joke here, and patient care is worse… Don’t come here if you think you’re having a heart attack or chest pains you might “crash” in the waiting room…Lourdes EcheverriaIf you want fast help don’t come here. We have been sitting in the waiting room with no news for about 3 hours. When we asked one of the nurses how much longer the wait would be they were very rude and told us they didn’t know. He actually informed us that people had been waiting for 9 hours before getting help. Just checking in, took about 30 minutes because no one was present at the sign in. Most of the people we spoke too were rude and unhelpful. I recommend going to another hospital if you want help.Forza TDHow do I rate it less than 1 star?! We now believe all the horror story reviews on here Daughter went to ER with history of MRSA/staph and a growing number of red, warm spots on her skin (now 20 and growing) and tonsils the size of the moon, BP and heart rate all messed up, Ox level low, major headache and nausea. They blew her off. 4 hours later she left, in tears, to try somewhere else. Front desk lady rude, nurse condescending. Just…. wow.lisa oliver⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedLevel 1 Trauma Center with a vast amount of services offered not all hospitals have available to patients. People come from all over to be treated because other hospitals don’t have the specialties Shands has. The problem is NOT this hospital the problem is the people. Noncompliance with healthcare regimens, not seeing and following up with primary care physicians, using the emergency room for “ non emergency related problems”, , multiple visits for same issues and the list goes on. Emergency Rooms are overwhelmed because of society. The waiting room gets filthy because the people that visit make it filthy. People have labs and tests performed in the waiting room to rule out emergent situations. This service is provided for staff and doctors to ensure people that are truly in need of emergency care get to rooms in a timely manner. Shands is an excellent facility and saves many lives. The staff are there because this is their passion. Helping others. If you want to ensure shorter wait times society needs to be educated on what an emergency room is truly needed for. Educate yourselves. ThankYou for the excellent staff and providers at Shands UF Health for all you do.Jessie EstockThought Shands was a good Place to go . *Thought . That’s it . Good it is NOT in fact the worse / most agonizing day I have literally ever experienced. I have not ever been overwhelmed so much with stress and anxiety in my life . Due to the horrific and disturbing things that take place here . Due to how absolutely disgusting and filthy the place is . Due to how long the wait is . My mother is on her 23 hour sitting in ER basically on her death bed . They will say is they’re are people waiting on rooms in front of you . But still will not actually tell her if she’s being “admitted” . What a joke . She arrived yesterday around 10 am . It’s 9:26 am the next day almost 24 hours later . I doubt that is acceptable by any standards . ( only if the people reading this knew how bad of shape my mother is In) would completely understand my frustration. She has one of the most complicated medical histories anyone could ever fathom . From terminal cancer to short bowl syndrome to her body cannot absorb nutrients from anything she intakes , so she lives off of iv nutrients and hydration 24/7 . Weighs maybe 100 lbs and she’s 5’8 . Goes critically low on various things such as calcium or Magnesium etc. and looses any normal body functions . Such as being able to move or talk or stay awake . But yet this is of very little to no concern to the staff at UF they’re more worried about how many test they can bill for rather than help and intake and treat people in a timely and courteous manner . stay far from here unless you have 0 choice . Someone please step in and turn this place around it is atrocious and a down right terrible display of what Gainesville / UF should be able to provide for people . Absolutely a DISGRACE.Carlo WilsonNever again .. this is the slowest most emergency room in Jacksonville I spent 5hr in the wait room while I hear a party going on in one of the staff rooms please save time energy and frustration and take the ride to the south side or in fact any other emergency room but this one if you’re not about to die and can make it someplace else please do .Chrishonda Lewis⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedI work here as an employee (not nursing staff..yet) but the employees here work hard many times without lunch just to make sure their Patients are comfortable. While they may not be able to please everyone they try. Ive seen them save lives. There job is beyond stressful and when they fall short on staff they come thru like a Champ working together. So next tine you come visit us remember its a 1000+ more patients that are here to be seen for emergencies and some non emergencies and they push to attend to all 1000+ Patients with Love and Care. Keep up the Awesome Work guys inspite of it all.Denise LongWorst ER been here since 1 PM chest pains taking less sick people back …..never come to Shands again.rude people at desk….I’m in tears dont know what to dostacy cannon⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedFather had stroke. Was taken right back to Truama bay. Neuorolgust saw him immediately. Transfer to hospital room within 6 hours. Immediate test & bloodwork while in ER. They were greatErin Dawson⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThis hospital has saved my life and that of my husband on numerous occasins, we love this hospital.Mehri TWorst ever! Waiting in ER for few hours with no attention and help from anyone.Nick ScibiliaMy friend waited at this “ER” for 7.5 hours after stating she has been throwing up constantly and feels very very ill. We received no help at all for the time waiting this place is a disaster. I am beyond disappointed and this should be an example to all Emergency Rooms on what not to be. Absolutely absurd.Graham DunnegeIt’s just after midnight on Thursday morning. Got here at about 9:50 yesterday morning. Yes, yesterday morning. I’m accompanying someone I brought in with chestpains and shortness of breath. She is at least in a bed now, for the past 3.5 hours. They have drawn blood a few times, and a doctor actually spoke to her twice. For six hours we have been waiting on a CT scan. The place is disorganized, and filthy by hospital standards Fourteen hours and counting…….nicholas williamsThe worst emergency room I’ve ever been to in my life. I’ve been here since 9am and it’s now 5pm just for a sprained wristAdriana ValladaresWorst experience ever. Super long wait and the staff was rude. We heard people were here for 9 hours before they got help. Very disappointing.brian blackmore⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedWe brought our daughter in and my wife grabbed a Dr. and asked him to look at her. He saw the severity of her condition and grabbed a nurse, and began treatment for DKA. After being informed of her battle with the flu and her reluctance to properly deal with her diabetic condition. The Dr. made the corrections to her treatment so she could be transferred to the ICU. My family is so grateful to this tremendous staff of professionals for the amazing service they provided to our daughter and for keeping us so well informed.Amy KemperThis was my worst emergency experience ever there is no point in going to this ER you will sit for over five hours in the waiting room and then when I asked how much longer it might be they give me an attitude and said there’s no end in sight I’m assuming the attitude came from other people waiting who had attitude and the employees just don’t know how to handle it anymore but not everyone is the same I was completely nice and in a lot of pain just wanted to know what was going on I then left after wasting five hoursDr. Fawzy EbrahimWorest ER on earth. North Florida is way better with nice staff. Avoid Shands ER.James WhiteMy wife wanted to go to the ER – she was having shortness of breath when she walked across the floor and was having a burning pain in her chest, and her blood pressure was strange (110/92) (very little difference between the top number and the bottom number). We have very bad experiences in the two closest ERs to us. I wanted to take her to the ER in Ocala where I had a great experience, but she wanted to go to the one in Gainsville at the hospital that put in her stent and where her cardiologist was (along with her medical records), so we made the 70 minute trip up there, checked in, and had her vitals taken, and was told to wait in a triage room. (A room off of the ER waiting room). They took blood samples, gave her a ECG, then a chest X-ray . . . and we waited . . . and waited . . . and then another blood draw . . . and waited . . . and waited. The room temperature was FREEZING. Betty felt better. She could walk around without shortness of breath, and had no pain in the chest, and so after 3 and 1/2 hours off waiting, we had them take out the IV port and we left. WE NEVER GOT TO SEE A DOCTOR. This is the worst experience in an ER we have ever had. Every time in the the past, we got put into a room with a bed (and a blanket), got hooked up to a blood monitor, and a doctor would show up and tell us what he thought and what was going to happen but not in this place. As we were leaving, another patient who was also complaining of chest pains that arrived about 90 minutes after we did also left. Anyway, we are home now and everything is OK. But if you are in Gainsville and are having an emergency, don’t go to UF Health Shands Emergency Room / Trauma Center – in addition to being slow and unresponsive, the place is dirty. Imagine a rest room near an emergency room in a hospital without soap. I must have been in 20 ERs in my life and this is the worst experience we have ever had. There is a very good reason they have a 1.7 out of 5 reviews on Google.Manish SharmaCan’t believe that this is an ER.. no matter how serious patient is- the staff will drag them to front desk to take the “vitals”. While waiting for my turn, i saw lots of patients; withering in pain with no paramedic to determine how urgent their case was. Worst part- some of the patients seemed “regular” visitors..Kerriann Murdock⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedThe trauma team was exceptional in assisting my daughter with her equine accident.TroyThis Emergency room is always a disaster! Each time over a 6 hour wait and crowded. Have to be on deaths door step for them to look at you. Not to mention poor accommodations and dirty.lesterPeople waiting for 9 hours to see a doctor…. Better off at any other hospitalJacob WallaceStaff is rude. Wait took 2 hours with nobody in the room. Nothing was stocked and there was urine all over the bathroom. Bring up any of it to the staff and they act like it’s an inconvenience to them.Jesus Raymondwaited 10 hours in the ER………….yes TEN HOURS to get admitted to the hospitalKara JohnsonThe wait is always long and for them to have enough staff on hand they really should do better. Don’t ever ever go to UF Shands to get treated cause they won’t help at all.Justin Ladd⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Very professional staff and handled things really well even under extreme circumstancesFredrica GatsonY’all need to get rid of this place and the employees…. Wait time too long and very unprofessional!!!Andrea Rodriguez⭐️⭐️I’m giving them at least two stars cause of the doctor actually doing his job and trying to figure out what’s going on but as for the rest of the staff they are lazy and rather sit around talking then check on patientsJacob CombsWaited close to 6 hours without being seen before finally giving up. People in the waiting room had been there closer to 10 hours and also hadn’t been checked out by a doctor. Must be severely understaffed as just about every seat was taken. Hardly saw anyone’s name get called to the back.Donald Deanemy wife they released on friday like she was worse then they brought her in there telling me to bring her in by taxi cab service she had fallen 11 times my back is out from trying to help her suwanee county wants to take them wherever they want with where they don’t specialize in liver transplants we waited 8 days for north florida to do her job now the charge nurse from the ER told me to call a taxi she can’t even get up her head jerks and she falls every time people this system sucks my wife is dieing and the end in suwannee county will take them where they want to long story short watch out shands u r being watched you guys are rude 2 guys couldn’t get her down the steps to put her in the car next ??????????Micah LI wish I can rate this facility Zero. Very nasty and rude nurses. VERY long waiting periods.Nicole OrtegaWhen I checked in, the receptionist asked me to tell her what my symptoms were. I later learned that she ignored practically everything I told her, and simply put me into the system as someone who had a fever, which was nowhere near the extent of my illness. I’m assuming that this was a big part of why I had to wait NINE WHOLE HOURS before getting admitted. To make matters worse, I was attended to by a nurse (while in the waiting area) who was incredibly rude and condescending. I have never felt so disrespected by a healthcare provider in my life. I respectfully asked her why she was placing a needle in my arm (what turned out to be) five hours before I would be admitted. She took that to mean I was complaining about the wait time, and told me that there were individuals out there who were in far worse condition than I was, and that I needed to stop “whining”. She continued to make snide remarks each time she spoke to me, and even demanded that I tell her what I was laughing about when I made an unrelated comment to my friend who was also in the room. I told her it was nothing but she insisted on knowing. Rude. At one other point, I tried to make conversation by mentioning that my older brother is scared of needles, and she responded by calling him stupid. Really? It wasn’t until my parents, who drove all the way from MIAMI, arrived that any progress was made. I’m starting to think that I was being ignored because I’m a young student, and they only paid attention when my parents showed up and demanded answers. When they brought up the fact that I was in very bad condition (even though I already had multiple times), I was finally looked at by a different nurse who realized that I was much more sick than they had realized, and she finally moved me to the top of the wait list. Once I was given a bed, the doctor and nurse inside were very compassionate and attentive, which is the only reason I’m giving this place a single star. But, the emergency room itself was very messy, loud, hectic, and dirty. I was also given an unnecessary ultrasound, which would’ve been avoided if the doctor had just waited a short while to get the results of my blood test back. In the time I was taken to the ultrasound room and brought back, the doctor had already diagnosed me, which meant I was charged for a test that I didn’t even need. I was then sent on my way, after finishing up an IV. In the days following that ER trip, I went back home to Miami and went to the ER two more times, where I was treated almost immediately and even administered and prescribed prednisone because my throat had swelled shut, something that the doctors at Shands didn’t catch. I was charged $2,541 for this nightmare of a hospital experience.David Bowlin⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅ ER RecommendedAwesome doctors and staff!K T BanksTHE WORST ER EXPERIENCE…EVER!!! GO ELSEWHERE… I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. 1ST TIME VISIT … HUSBAND WAITED FOR OVER 7 HOURS AND NO CARE WAS SHOWN. A POLL OF OTHER PATIENTS WAITING SAID 8 PLUS HOURS IS THE NORM. REALLY??? THIS IS TRULY UNACCEPTABLE IN EVERY WAY. SHANDS IS GREAT BUT THIS ER GETS ALL THE TRAUMA CASES- WHICH THEY TAKE FIRST. YOU ARE ALWAYS GOING TO WAIT HERE. REGRETTABLE WASTE OF TIME.Stella ProductionsThe wait in the er is about 5 to 8 hoursKirsten HammerleI came to this ER over NF because it was closer. Worst mistake ever. 11 weeks pregnant with complications. 5 hrs later I told them to remove the IV cause I was tired of sitting there with nothing being done. They took my blood but never bothered to do labs. I am not on my way to NF to get proper care for a prenatal emergency. Update: Within 3 hrs at NF they ran tests and I was diagnosed and sent home and had MUCH better service!Christina AtchleyThis er should not even have one star not even one! My mother who mind you just had spinal surgery 3 weeks ago was taken 2 hour by ambulance to this place she was in so much pain and could not get up her self. Before my dad could drop of his grandkids and make it there they had took her from the ambulance and put her in a wheelchair in the er waiting room by her self! AND SHES STILL WAITING AT 4:00pm ! ( they picked her up at 10am) Who the hell does that! Who ever made this call needs to lose their job or be retrained !!!!! To the hospital why do you allow your er to run this way , look at your reviews if we had before we would have went else where!GabrielaAVOID AT ALL COSTS. WORST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IN THE WORLD. NURSE DISRESPECTED A FAMILY MEMBER AND LEFT THEM THREE HOURS IN THE ROOM WITHOUT HELPING THEM. BLOOD PRESSURE THROUGH THE ROOF AND THEY DIDN’T CARE. THEY DIDN’T EVEN GIVE THEM THE IV/TREATMENT NEEDED. MACHINES BLARING, THEY DON’T CARE. LEFT WORST THAN WHEN THEY GOT THERE. PLEASE DON’T GO HERE.Kyla DozierI expected a lot more from this ER. My mother has been a regular neuro oncology/ surgery patient for almost 20 years now and we have always been impressed with Shands, until our experience in the ER. Our nurse was very kind but not attentitive. Our room was right outside the EMS entrance so super busy, loud and noisy. The nurses and staff complained at their desks the entire time we were there about everything. If they weren’t acting foolish they were cursing or complaining. There seemed little urgency with the patients coming in through EMS and no organization. Disappointed. Honestly felt like a bunch of teenagers were caring for my mother and the other patients.Jacqueline VeighSo sad Lady across me throwing up into a bag many times and they can’t get her back in a room..instead they left her out in waiting room to suffer and infect everyone else in lobby.Jason MerjaveBeen in the ER for 5 hours and still waiting next time I’ll go somewhere else this is terribleDanielle BrowningThe doctors here don’t care about the patients. I’ve been here in absolute agony with a dislocated elbow for almost six hours. I’ve had one dose of pain meds that my nurse had to fight for me to get and that wore off hours ago. I’m never coming here again.Janet KernHospital is great! ER is terrible. Have never been there, less than 10 hours. Waiting here now already at 9 hours and still haven’t seen a doctor. Really need to separate ER and TRAUMA. it’s ridiculous.J TVI understand this is an “emergency” room, but the wait is ridiculous. For seriously everything. I was in there for 3+ hours and only ONE person got taken back that whole time. The staff seem to not care about anything but going home. Unless you are bleeding out, lost a limb, or have a broken bone, DO NOT go here. You won’t get the help you need. I ended up walking out because there was little to no chance I was going to be treated.Robin SimmonsThis is absolutely BS! I’ve been here over 5 hours, which an ambulance brought me here from a very bad car accident where someone hit me in a large truck and totaled my car and they won’t let me get x-rays! I’ve sit here longer enough where I’ve been here longer than every single person in this lobby and they’re still taking the newer people instead of taking me! This place is ridiculous! Don’t come here unless you’re ready to wait your life away!Raul TorresWho runs this??? Staff was nice but I don’t understand why the wait time is soooo longJustin Gearhart⭐️⭐️Well I ain’t dead and that’s about all I can say. Staff was generally nice but some seem incompetent. After getting admitted and recieving ultrasound I was left in lobby and forgotten for an hour. Somebody finally realized and got me into a bed but seemingly through the night I was forgotten again. It’s hard to trust any results received due to all of this. Some of this may be due the fact I was not dying though immediate medical emergency is why I was admitted. Wouldn’t recommend as there are other places you could and probably should go
